As an online merchant accepting credit card payments, you have numerous security issues that you must be aware of for the safety of your business and your consumers. At this time, there are two main aspects of credit card security for credit card processing, including “AVS” and “CVV”. Both allow credit card transactions to be completed anonymously over the internet, and any merchant accepting credit cards online should require both forms of information of your customers.

Address Verification Service

The “AVS”, or address verification service, is used to determine that the address provided by a customer matches the address associated with a credit card account. This helps generate confidence that the person who is entering the credit card details is the person who owns it. While the AVS is not required to process credit card transactions, when it is provided the transaction processor will send a response back with details of how much of the address provided matches the address on the credit card.

A credit card will not be denied if the address is entered wrong, it is up to the merchant to decide what to do if the address only matches partially or not at all. You can deny the sale, or require the buyer submit additional information, or give them the opportunity to correct the address information, before processing the transaction.

Card Verification Value

The “CVV”, or card verification value, sometimes referred to as the CVV-2 is a three to four digit number found on the back of American Express, MasterCard and Visa cards. It’s on the card but not on any statements, so that if an individual has found a credit card statement in the trash, they aren’t able to complete a sale that requires the CVV code for verification purposes. When a customer is able to enter the CVV code, it’s a strong indication that the customer has the credit card in hand, which increases the potential of the card belonging to the person who is attempting to use it to make a purchase online.

Most credit card fraud online occurs when a thief has found a discarded receipt or a thrown out credit card statement, but by requiring the CVV code, the merchant can eliminate that type of fraud.

If a CVV number is entered and is incorrect, the transaction will be declined by the credit card issuer.

Providing Consumers with Top Security

If you are going to accept credit cards online for payment for products or services offered through your website, it’s imperative that you provide your customers with a guarantee that you’re protecting their credit card information.

Credit card processing typically requires that the customer’s information is transferred about four times, which means there are four instances when someone could gain access to the cardholder’s details.
When a customer first sends the credit card information to you via your checkout or web based form. You are solely responsible for security as the internet merchant, at this stage in the credit card transaction process. Having a secure server and a valid security certificate with the https protocol will protect and encrypt private information you receive from customers.

You will want to be sure that the credit card transaction processing software you use for your business is secure by using a reputable processing company.
As customer information is moved in and out of a database through the transaction process, the security must be top of the line- and this is ensured by choosing a solid company that offers encrypted software for this part of the process.

Finally, when customer credit card information is viewed or handled by you or your staff, it’s important that you ensure security at this stage as well.

Help answer the question about credit card services

What happens when you request a credit card stop payment to services and products not received?
Does the business still keep the payment (the transaction was already done) and/or just a flag or mark on their record by the credit card company. Does anything get flagged on our credit report? We have had some very bad luck with a photographer we worked with and considering this an option.

You should phone Citigroup directly, and ask if this is normal procedure. If not, ask them to put a stop on the card immediately, and issue you with a new card and pin number. You should also contact the police, and report the incident.

I believe you can call the credit card company to verify the card is active or even if it is reported stolen.

There are many different levels of clearance. You don't specify what level you need to obtain. If you need any of the higher tiers in the clearance spectrum then your credit would be enough to keep you from qualifying.

(And yes, credit is a HUGE, enormous factor in getting a security clearance! People with a bad credit history tend to have ongoing financial problems. People with financial problems tend to be more likely to commit criminal acts to deal with those financial problems and/or may be vulnerable to bribes or blackmail. Therefore, folks with bad credit are a security risk and are not suitable candidates for jobs that require security clearances – to include law enforcement positions. Note: Having a couple of negative things on your credit report isn't what I'm talking about. This is more about a pattern and practice of not paying your bills.)

Regardless of whatever level of clearance you need, you should probably get your warrant taken care of before starting the process. But, as long as you're honest on the paperwork and the clearance level is a lower one you might be okay.

Сredit repair workеd fine to fix my credit. They disputed and removed lots of bad items from my credit report. I used this service – creditreport.fateback.com

For a Secret clearance: Pretty good. Top Secret you may have issues with, but for what you described, it sounds likely you will get it.

While I think that what you chose to do was a wonderful thing, it would be very difficult to find any "proof" that would satisfy especially your stepmom. This isn't a personal vendetta about you, it is a fear she has that is not entirely groundless in general terms although possibly not specifically.

At this point you can accept the fact that your parents pay the bill for the network which you have the privilege of using. In essence, they are the hosts and you are the guest. While I know this sounds harsh, that is the way it is.

I would gather the information and ask her if she will listen even though you intend to abide by her wishes. After you have demonstrated the security offered, you can then explain the value of the program for which you were volunteering. (And believe me, I do understand the value) You might also want to evaluate the best security programs available for her lap top, your computer and any other equipment on that network.

And I do understand about not letting other people use your computer. A few years ago my daughter, a teacher, let her cousin use her computer while that cousin was house-sitting for her. When she came home my daughter discovered that sites she considered pornographic had been visited. A similar thing happened to my sister even though some traces had been removed, they were still there – my sister also worked with children and did not want this sort of thing buried in her hard drive. And one of them did have a brief problem with identity theft via a carbon receipt back in the day.

What is important for you to understand is that as we get grow (get older) we develop fears for our safety. Sometimes we can let go of these fears with help or motivation and sometimes we can't. When someone younger tries to persuade us it is difficult to let go of the fears because we are supposed to be protecting them and it is hard to comprehend that they might know more because we are not only a bit envious but also a bit afraid that we really do still need to protect them.

Would you feel the same way – so irritated – if she were your birth-mother and not your stepmom?

I think she is doing her best but since her friend had the problem, your step-om is not ready and may never be. Make your peace with it.

Hard to say, depends upon the position. They do not like a person in debt, subject to bribes….wait and see, nothing you can do until you pass it. Security checks vary, depending upon "how deep"…there are levels. Good luck to you! (former US FED/SES/DC)

First thing is you do NOT need to place any freeze on her credit reports, she has none! unless you opened an account using her social #.
Second, it would be a lot harder now days for anybody to obtain credit with her SS#, only, they would need more information as lenders are cracking down on abuse.

Keep copies of the paperwork from SS in case years later some collection agency contacts you about a debt in her name, this will provide proof that her SS# was used illegaly and that she is not responsible for any debts.

You must report stolen or lost social security cards to Social Secuirty for re-issue of a new card (same number). You can use the following link to download the form you need to obtain a new card for her. Be sure to bring along her birth certificate also.
